How do I raise my CRS score?
How do I raise my CRS score?
Undoubtedly, the process of selection in Canada’s immigration is quite competitive. Most of its immigration programs follow the point-based system to evaluate the applications for the invitation for Canada’s PR. It includes some selection factors like age, education, work experience, and language proficiency, based on which candidates are assigned a score under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
However, only higher-scoring candidates get the chance to receive an invitation to apply through the regular draws. So if you are interested in applying for Canada PR, then you need to score well in the Comprehensive Ranking System.
For instance, the minimum CRS score for the latest Express Entry draw held on July 10, 2019, was 460. It means all those candidates who secured less than 460 points could not apply for Canada PR process. So, if this applies to your case too, then this post is of great help. The following is the list of points which help applicants to increase their CRS score.
Work on the scorecard of the language proficiency test:
Canada is a bilingual language. It has two official languages, English and French. So, it is mandatory for applicants to have command in either of the languages to get their things done in the country after immigration. So, take a language proficiency test and try to score well in all four language abilities including speaking, writing, reading and listening. In the Comprehensive Ranking System, the maximum points for language proficiency are 160 (without a spouse) and 150 (with a spouse).
For first official language:
Canadian Language Benchmark | Points awarded per ability with spouse/common-law partner | Points awarded per ability without spouse/common-law partner |
less than 4 | 0 | 0 |
4 or 5 | 6 | 6 |
6 | 8 | 9 |
7 | 16 | 17 |
8 | 22 | 23 |
9 | 29 | 31 |

9 or more | 6 | 6 |
Keep working for more years of experience:
Almost every immigration programs, either Federal express entry or Provincial nominee program requires skilled and experienced foreign nationals who can immediately contribute to the economy of the country. So if you have less than 3-years of full-time work experience, then keep working to gain good experience in the relevant job field to enhance your CRS score for Canada PR. In the Comprehensive Ranking System, the maximum points for work experience are 80 (without a spouse) and 70 (with a spouse).
Work experience (in years) | Points awarded with spouse/common-law partner | Points awarded without spouse/common-law partner |
less than a year | 0 | 0 |
1 | 35 | 40 |
2 | 46 | 53 |
3 | 56 | 64 |
4 | 63 | 72 |
5 or more | 70 | 80 |
Get a nomination through any Canadian province:
Any express entry candidate, who receives nomination through any Canadian province, awarded with an additional 600 points towards his/her total CRS score. It enhances chances of applicant for invitation round through draws. So if you found eligible for any of the express entry-linked PNP, apply to it and increase your CRS score.
Make your spouse or common-law partner a primary applicant:
In case your spouse or common-law partner has higher CRS score than yours, then it is advisable to make him/her a primary applicant in your visa application. However, it is worth noting here that this option is valid for only those who have not still started the application for express entry profile. Once the profile has created, no changes can be further done in the name of primary applicant of existing Express entry profile.
Study in Canada:
If you have already prepared yourself for settlement in Canada, then first plan to study in Canada to raise your CRS score for permanent residency. The experience of studying in Canadian institution can easily create the difference and enhance your chances for PR.
Education:
In the Comprehensive Ranking System, the maximum points for level of education are 150 (without spouse) and 140 (with spouse).
